I work at Stop & Shop and I see people come in who are on welfare that I at times question if they are really struggling in life so much to where they can't support themselves and their family, as well as wonder if they are on drugs by the image they give off. How many families are really unable to get a job and make enough money to feed their children and put a roof over their head? How many people are abusing the system? How many people are using their welfare money to purchase drugs? If this is the case then it may seem that we are paying for your drugs and well, that just isn't quite right. It kind of looks like the point of drug testing people on welfare is to find out who is abusing the system. By testing the applicants we will use our money on people who really need it. Lawrence M. Mead, taken from one of our resources, Professor of Politics and Public Policy at NYU, brings up a good idea, that testing should most definitely be used for people who are known to have a history of substance abuse. We wouldn't necessarily cut them off, but we would keep up with the process they are going through, making sure they're in rehab and actually trying to get better. (mentioned in this blog)

I think it would be good to offer drug testing for people on welfare especially people who have a history of drug abuse. These people are seeking out help from the government and then are using this funding for things that are not crucial to survival. At the after school program I work at we see struggling families just trying to get by that get turned down for funding while these people can buy drugs with their money they are given. Testing would reduce this problem.

I think it would be a good idea to drug test people who are on welfare. It seems that some of the people on welfare are abusing the system and should be tested for drug use. If they are not abusing the system, they should have no problem taken a drug test because they know they will pass. I feel that people are seeking government help and we provide money to those who are in need, but somehow some of them find enough money to afford drugs. Most of us are paying for them to get the drugs they take. Somethings need to be changed to make sure our money goes to people who are truly in need and will not abuse the government system.

I think that someone that is on welfare should have to be required to take a drug test. Everyone that starts at a new job is required to take a drug test in order to be able to work. If the drug test that you take comes back positive you can be denied the job. So why can't someone that is not working and getting money from our government not have to take one? If someone is not abusing drugs and the system than there should not be a problem with them taking the test. There are so many families out there that really do need this help and is being denied while some people are abusing this privilege. Our hard working money is going into someone elses addiction.
